Best Service Dog Vest Overall: Industrial Puppy Service Dog Vest

The Industrial Puppy Service Dog Vest looks official, has an adjustable fit, and excellent versatility. Each side of the vest has a removable patch so that the reflective “service dog” patch may be replaced with one that reads “in training” or “emotional support.” Or, the patches can be removed altogether when the dog is off duty.

Above the patches are rings onto which you can attach saddlebags. (Please note that sizes XXS, XS, and small are not designed for use with saddlebags.) That gives the owner some storage space for dog treats, a dog bowl, or personal items. A durable nylon handle on the top of the vest provides a hold for training or control. This part of the vest also includes a D-ring for a dog leash.

Comfort is an important feature. After all, the dog may be wearing the vest for several hours a day. An adjustable, reflective strap across the neck/chest helps the owner get the perfect fit while increasing visibility. There’s also an adjustable chest strap around the dog’s rib cage. A mesh lining gives some breathability so the dog doesn’t overheat.

Who Should Buy a Service Dog Vest

If your dog functions as a service, emotional support, or therapy dog, a service dog vest might be a great investment for you. These vests serve a couple of different purposes.

First, they clearly mark a dog while they’re on the job. Most people know that if a dog has on a service vest, they shouldn’t pet or distract the dog; he’s working. Service dogs are allowed in public buildings, and a clearly marked vest lets security and personnel know the dog’s purpose. Note: A service vest is not required the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, they’re an easy way for owners to let people know when their dog is on duty.

Second, service dog vests have extra handles, buckles, and/or D-rings to help them in their work as well as their owners during training and control exercises. Some MOLLE systems to carry dog supplies or gear for the owner, too. Tactical service dog vests allow dogs to carry far more gear, with some protecting the dog’s body from brush and other hazards with which they may face.

Finally, service dog vests provide a safety harness that’s designed to reduce or eliminate choking. Corrections made with a harness stop the dog but put the pressure on the lower neck/chest area and the dog’s rib cage rather than directly on the neck. You maintain control, and the dog learns without pain.

If you have a service dog, then it’s likely you’ll be taking him or her with you wherever you go. For that circumstance, you may want to check out The Best Dog Car Seat Covers.

Important Features to Consider

A service dog vest should have a few important features. Here’s what to consider when selecting a service dog vest:

  • Size. Measure your dog around his rib cage and at the lower neck as most service dog vests are sized based on these two measurements. However, follow the manufacturer’s instruction guides to make sure you’re taking measurements in the right locations as some require you to also measure the dog’s height and length.
  • Versatility and attachment features. Think about how you plan to use the vest. Do you need to take your dog from “in training” to a full “service dog?” Then a vest with removable patches is probably a good idea. Vests with D-rings and top handles give you more control and training options. Some include rings on the top, sides, or chest, while others may only have one for a leash. Models with a MOLLE system may also be helpful if you want your dog to pack gear, too.
  • Coverage. Service dog vests range from a harness made entirely of straps to a 3/4 length fitted vest with a neck strap and two chest straps. Obviously, the more coverage the vest provides, the warmer it will be for the dog. However, a vest with more coverage can also provide extra control in tense situations, extra space to stow gear, or protection from rough underbrush. Think about how you’ll use the vest. For everyday activities, a light to medium coverage vest will do, but for heavy-duty work, a vest with more coverage might be more practical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a service dog vest?

A service dog vest has a strap that goes around the dog’s neck with another that fits across the chest/rib cage. They typically have a handle and D-ring on the top for extra control of the dog. Some also have rings on the front chest strap. These vests can be used to clearly mark a service dog or as a training tool. Some have patches that identify the dog as a service animal. However, it should be noted that an official service dog does not need to wear a service vest in public to legally perform their duties or enter public spaces.

Can any dog wear a service dog vest?

Any dog can wear a service vest, but wearing a service dog vest does not make the dog a service dog. An official service dog must serve a person with a disability and go through training to pass the Public Access Test. At that point, they can be used as an official service dog. Some people may also choose to certify and register their service dog, but certification and registration are not a requirement of the ADA. The ADA does not require owners to mark their service dogs with a vest or other identification, but they may be required to answer two questions to identify their service dog as an official service animal.

How can you tell if a service dog is legitimate?

As defined by the ADA, a service dog is one that “is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.” Under the ADA, you can determine a service dog by asking one of two questions:

  1. Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
  2. What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

The owner of the service dog is required to answer these two questions, and these two questions only to identify their service dog. They do not need identification or any other certificate to prove the legitimacy of the dog’s training. Service animals are generally allowed to go wherever the person can go. However, there are limitations such as sterile environments in a hospital, for example.

What size service dog vest does my dog need?

Measure around your dog’s neck and chest/ rib cage behind the front legs. Most manufacturers use these two measurements for sizing purposes. Keep in mind that each manufacturer has their own sizing chart and may require extra measurements to get the appropriate fit.
